The Kansas City Zoo Needs You

by Eliza Ferree

kansascityzoo_logo.jpgThe Kansas City Zoo is just another item of the budget cut list for Kansas City. Mayor Mark Funkhouser has proposed an idea of weaning the Kansas City Zoo. Are our Zoo animals endanger of getting shipped somewhere else? Once the Mayor let it be known that they were planning on hitting the City Zoo, the public became outraged and started sending support to the zoo in various forms. So far the Mayor’s office has had numerous emails, phone call and letters.

Due to the overwhelming response the Mayor is now looking at helping by raising the cost of the zoo tickets, charging for parking and our worse fear… sending some animals away and cutting some staff members. The Mayor believes that instead of cutting the $4.6 million altogether he can just cut it to $4 million and hopefully the public will pick up the tab.

Friends of the Zoo are asking the public for help, instead of bringing your own food and drinks purchase items from them. Keep in mind this keeps the zoo open and they can put it back into the zoo for other things.

How can you help? Plan a day to go out to the Kansas City Zoo, sure it’s a small thing but if enough people show up and purchase tickets, drinks and food it’ll all add up. Maybe your family plans on going more than once a year, purchase an annual membership to the zoo.

Membership:
Individual adults: $40
Family: 2 adults plus kids $65

Animals you may find at the zoo:
Elephants, gorilla, flamingo, kangaroo, tiger, camel, orangutan, aviary, langur, crane, lorikeet, sea lions, baboon, zebras, cheetah, hippo, tortoise, giraffe, crocodile, chimpanzee, rhino, meerkat, and many more.
